Realizing the need and importance of research in the field of poultry economics and marketing, an independent section of Poultry Economics and Agribusiness Research at the Institute was created on April 4, 2012 in pursuance of the recommendations of successive QRTs particularly, the QRT 2003-2009 as approved by the Council.

  • Studies on poultry value chains, marketing and finance to boost poultry sector.
  • Policy planning and analysis vis-a-vis emerging threats and opportunities concerning poultry sector including international trade.

Research Activities & Achievements

Assessing Economic Impact of Selected CARI Technologies and Services:

The study intended to carry out economic impact assessment of the CARI Poultry Germplasm (CARI NIRBHEEK and CARI SHYAMA) distributed amongst DAPST/SC beneficiaries under its outreach programme. The study used propensity score matching technique for assessing the economic impact of the treatment (distribution of improved poultry) on the treated (farmer beneficiaries).

Supply Response Analysis of Maize and Soybean:

The project aimed at identification of potential growth areas for the two major feed ingredients, their supply response behaviour to price and non-price factors, decomposition analysis, and production elasticities. Risk variables significantly affected maize acreage, while soybean growth was primarily due to acreage increase. Poultry population and irrigation were major drivers for soybean.

Studies on consumers’ preferences and marketing of poultry products in North India.

The project studied channels of egg and meat marketing, consumers’ preferences in North Indian elite organized retailing v/s unorganized markets in smaller towns; value addition, manual v/s mechanized processing of broilers, compared marketing channels for packaged vs. unpackaged poultry products, identified value addition opportunities, and constraints in elite and rural markets.

Development of Project Formulation Software for Poultry:

MS-Windows® based software was developed to formulate projects for commercial layer & broiler farms. It may be used for preparing project reports for farmers/entrepreneurs seeking financial support or starting poultry businesses.

Economic Analysis of Poultry Production and Marketing in India:

The project aimed at time series analysis in egg and meat prices, market -cointegration analysis, economic analysis of poultry production technologies, inter-regional analysis of growth areas, productivity trends, and long-term price movements. Co-integration analysis showed the interdependence of egg markets across the country.

International Poultry Trade & Export Opportunities:

The project aimed at studying the pattern of international poultry trade, analysis of comparative cost advantage, exploration of export opportunities and trade barriers for Indian poultry sector. The project also identified potential export destinations for poultry products on the basis of gross margins per shipment.

Economic analysis of poultry production in Kumaon Hills.
Looked into the cost and return aspects of poultry production in hilly areas of Kumaon in addition to the models of backyard poultry and poultry marketing etc.
Small Farm Rural Poultry Production (the World Bank funded project under NATP):

Tested improved native crosses in the backyard free range poultry rearing systems, developed feed supplement packages, identified constraints in their adoption, and assessed impact on income, nutrition, and women empowerment. Project rated excellent by the advisory panel.

Study on Institutional Credit Support in Uttar Pradesh:

Trends and pattern of institution credit support to poultry sector, issue of enhancing the formal credit support to this sector, impact of institutional credit on poultry production activities in context of income and employment generation as also the bottle necks in such credit flow. Analysed constraints in financing poultry farming. Found disease risks, lack of insurance, collateral, and awareness as key issues. Finance was more accessible for expansion of existing units.

 

Hazard Analysis of poultry waste & Techno-economic Evaluation of its Alternative uses:

The project analysed quantum of poultry waste generation in India over time, projected future trends, and assessed its impact on environment. The project also attempted to suggest best options for utilizing poultry waste through economic evaluation of processing and value addition technologies.

 

Rural poultry farming-A pilot study on transfer of technology

An outreach programme aimed at popularizing small scale poultry rearing in rural areas; assessing impact on income, employment and consumption. 

Human resource planning for poultry sector in India: A forecasting study.

Analysis of shortfalls / surpluses vis-à-vis trained manpower output from various colleges/educational institutions in India. The project also flagged the researchable issues of immediate importance.

Micro level prioritization of production constraints and researchable areas in commercial poultry sector.

Poultry Entrepreneurship Development Initiative – The Agri Business Incubator:

The project provides incubation support to the entrepreneurs /incubates in poultry production and allied venture. The ABI project (Rs. 79.15 lakh) was launched in 2016 to support business incubation, commercialization of technologies, and human resource development for poultry entrepreneurship. The ABI Centre has so far conducted 22 EDPs. The Centre conducts at least 4 EDPs per year. The Centre also provides hand holding support through various social media channels and closed user groups who complete the EPD training successfully.
